South East Water Pressure Sewer System - Cannons Creek
|
When:
|
October 2004 |
|
Client:
|
South East Water, Victoria |
Scope of Work:
SADB was awarded a contract by South East Water in Victoria to
install a pressure sewer system in the township of Cannon Creek.
The area was serviced by a traditional septic system type sewer.
This system was now aging and causing environmental damage to the
local eco-environment. In particular it was leaking into the surrounding
estuary. The landscape in the area is costal with shifting sands
and a high water table. This area was considered to be a high risk
area with the potential for huge environmental damage during construction.
Initially a new gravity system was proposed for the area, however
due to the flat landscape, the high water table and sandy soil
conditions it was found that this traditional method would be extremely
costly to install. This therefore suited a pressure sewer system,
due to the construction constraints.
SADB were employed to install the system, an offer was made to
SEW to directional drill the complete project, as it was considered
that open excavation would still cause environmental damage. This
offer was looked upon favourably by the client. SADB worked with
the designers on redesigning sections of the project to allow for
drilling. We also used our project management and civil construction
expertise to ensure the client’s expectations would be met.
Given an 8 week construction period, SADB completed the following
activities on time and under budget. SADB employed the services
of our alliance partners DCE, to take care of the customer focus
and engineering issues on the project. DCE liaised with the residents,
local council and SEW to ensure all the expectations of all stake
holders were met. All the residents were informed through a letter
drop and face to face consultation, to ensure they were aware of
the works proposed for the area. This proved beneficial as there
were no complaints from residents during the construction program.
The following Scope of Work was completed.
- 4000 metres of directional drilling and installation of pipe
ranging from 63mm to 125mm.
- 160 property connections, from the newly laid mains to the
house lots.
- 160 property boundary kits with ball valves were
also installed.
- Installed Isolation Values, Flushing Points, Vacuum
and Scour Points were installed.
- All fittings were fitted using an electro fusion
system. Each joint was carefully welded to ensure
pressure was
held in the
system.
As part of the project scope, a strict regime to test the installed
system was required. The project was tested and passed with only
one weld out of the 600 plus welds failing.
Most importantly the project was completed with no lost time
injuries and no environmental incidents.
